He was described by activist <a title="A. Philip Randolph" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A._Philip_Randolph">A. Philip Randolph</a> as "the father of Harlem radicalism" and by the historian <a title="Joel Augustus Rogers" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joel_Augustus_Rogers">Joel Augustus Rogers</a> as "the foremost Afro-American intellect of his time." <a title="John G. Jackson (writer)" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_G._Jackson_(writer)">John G. Jackson</a> of <a title="American Atheists" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Atheists">American Atheists</a> described him as "The Black <a title="Socrates" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socrates">Socrates</a>"</p>]]></description>
