“I felt led by God to work in Quitman County for Quitman Countians.”

My family has been in Quitman County for more than 120 years, going back to when my great-grandfather, Frank Jackson, moved with his wife and children to Vance, Miss. Back-breaking jobs picking cotton brought my family and most black people to this area in the early 1900s.

My parents, eight siblings, and I built on that foundation of hard work as we ventured into various careers.

I graduated from Quitman County High School, now Madison Shannon Palmer High School, in 1973 and earned degrees from Northwest Community College and the University of Southern Mississippi. At USM, I became a member of the oldest and coldest Greek-lettered organization, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., even chartering the Mu Xi chapter.

Since the 1970s, I’ve worked with Quitman County legends like my father Weddie “Bo” Jackson Sr., the Rev. Carl Brown and Lillie V. Davis to find ways to improve this community. I can’t begin to name all of the wonderful people here who supported me and continued to inspire me to fight the inequities well-known to those who call the Mississippi Delta home.

Through Quitman County Development Organization, which I helped found in 1977, and the former Quitman Tri-County Federal Credit Union, I worked to improve early childhood and young adult education, housing, and community and economic development.

Always looking for ways to serve Quitman County, I sought the office and became the first African-American elected to the QC Board of Supervisors.

Standing on the shoulders of the great Fannie Lou Hamer, I was honored to hold the office she sought in the 1960s. As the first black senator for District 11, I secured millions of dollars for Coahoma, Panola, Tunica and Quitman Counties.

I’m a member of Pleasant Hope M B Church, board member and stockholder of Delta Burial Corporation and board president of the Aaron E. Henry Community Health Center, Mississippi Action for Community Education and Mississippi Workers Center for Human Rights.

I’ve felt led by God to work IN Quitman County FOR Quitman County. With your support, I will become the first African-American Chancery Clerk for Quitman County.
